He whispered softly, "Listen."

As his voice drifted, she let that part of her follow it into the darkness. Footsteps echoed off the bricks of the school wall. In the distance, a car flashed by the road and lit up his face. Blue eyes twinkled and she could see him looking at her but his mind drifted in the cool wind that rustled her hair. A child let out a high pitched spout of laughter in the corner of her consciousness. She remembered long summer nights with stars, longing and loneliness. And for the first time, it didn't wash over her in an icy waterfall nor did it feel like she was blocking out the tide. The skin on her arms was cold but her body was so warm, for the first time, so warm. That same part of her wanted to fall into those eyes, only she knew she couldn't fall into him any farther. The traces of pain weren't as raw as she had heard on the receiver. She ached to think that there was pain hidden under those level shoulders. It killed her to know that they had been weak and shaking not so long ago. Something wanted to lash out at the source of the pain but anger only made her feel rawer within herself and more exhausted. How could one person make her such a mess but so whole at the same time.

"Do you hear that?" his breath drifted over her skin.

"Yeah." The word almost stumbled out. Like a child blurting out the first thing that came to mind.

"The ambiance of this place is beautiful, don't you think?"

"Yeah, beautiful." And it really was, more than he knew.
When words mean heartbeats :)

Enjoy!

I don't know about the ambiance of the school after every one is gone for the day, but the ambiance of that second paragraph is pretty darn nice. Good work!
